APPEL: Proof 20 -
Emerging Canadian Artists

Proof is Gallery 44′s annual exhibition of photo-based work by Canadian emerging artists reflecting a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary photography from across the country. Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist as was the case for artists such as Karin Bubas, Janieta Eyre, Isabelle Hayeur, Germaine Koh, Nicholas Pye, Althea Thauberger, and Andrew Wright.

To mark Proof’s 20th anniversary in 2013, Gallery 44 is extending the scope of the exhibition to engage emerging Canadian curators. We are calling for curators from three zones in Canada (see below), in order to gain a better representation of emerging artists from across the country. Each curator’s program will highlight a selection of 3–5 artists from their geographical area and be presented in the Proof 20 exhibition at Gallery 44 in June/July 2013. Mindful that an open call to submit proposals for exhibition is an important opportunity for emerging artists, Gallery 44 will still hold an open call for artist submissions for Proof 20. We will require selected curators to review and choose from these submissions when developing their final exhibition program for Proof 20. Curators will also be encouraged to use their knowledge of photo-based artists in their zone to bring forward the best of Canadian photo-based practices.

Zone 1: British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, North West Territories

Zone 2: Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario

Zone 3: Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland

Gallery 44 defines an emerging artist or curator as someone in the early stages of their career, regardless of age.

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit artist-run centre committed to photography as a multi-faceted and ever-changing art form. We encourage the submission of exhibition proposals from artists in the early stages of their careers for this annual group exhibition. Consistent with our overall programming objectives, this exhibition highlights the work of artists who are innovative in their use of the medium and approach to subject matter. Proof is not intended to represent a particular theme but rather to reflect a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary Canadian photography.

Information on previous Proof exhibitions can be found on Gallery 44′s website at www.gallery44.org/previous_exhibitions and database at www.gallery44database.org
