Inaugural Artist / Curator / Writer Residency

Forest City Gallery’s inaugural artist/curator/writer residency is looking to support one visiting artist or collaboration (up to 3 individuals) for a two-month-long residency period in London, Ontario.

FCG is partnering with H.B. Beal Secondary School to allow artists, writers, and curators to produce, educate, discuss, and collaborate with the next generation of artist leaders in London, ON. H.B Beal High School is known for BealArt, an arts-focused educational institution, complete with many various production facilities and studios. The BealArt program has university articulation agreements with universities across Canada. Grade 12+ (1 and 2 years after grade 12) courses at Beal Art include Studio Practice (one year intensive) and Specialist (one year intensive) that prepare students for post-secondary and professional practice.

Selected residency participants will be expected to discuss their respective practice with students and interested adolescents in order to contextualize, educate, and inform about the various issues and themes present. This would take place through workshops, art talks, critiques, studio visits, and other activities during the duration of the residency. Two (2) London-based artists and one (1) Ontario-based artist will be selected for the residency.

Support: Two months of free studio space. Chosen artist/s will be awarded a stipend of $1300 (CAN). Accomodations in a private apartment in a central location will be given to out-of-London artists. Monthly City Bus Pass provided. Scheduled access to printmaking equipment, ceramic equipment, woodshop, mechanical shop all with a range of basic hand tools and resources. Artists will participate in public programming in the form of an artist talk or workshop, open studio tours, or other discussed/proposed outreach initiatives

Costs: Artists will be responsible for covering costs associated with purchase of materials, shipment of artwork/supplies, travel costs, and subsistence expenses.

Location: London, Ontario, Canada (The traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Attawandaron and Lenape Indigenous peoples).

Host: Forest City Gallery — Forest City Gallery (FCG) is an artist-run centre founded on artistic autonomy with a commitment to excellence in programming exhibitions and events that reflect and address recent developments in cultural production. FCG serves to foster and support contemporary art, promoting dialogue amongst local, regional, and international arts communities. FCG represents artists of all disciplines and career levels with a focus on emergent artists and practices.

Duration: 6-7 weeks, Oct – Dec 2018

Eligibility: Open to London and surrounding region-based (Ontario) artists working in a range of disciplines including but not limited to the visual arts, music, composition, new media, interdisciplinary arts, curatorial, and writers. Artists from all levels in their career who exhibit a strong professional work ethic and a collaborative attitude are invited to apply.

Proposal (300 word max): Describe the nature of the work you would like to produce while in residence. Please express, if applicable, why you would like to carry out this work in London, in/with BealArt, and/or with the support of Forest City Gallery.

Artist Statement: (300 word max): Describe your overall practice and how it relates to the specific interests you are pursuing in your proposed program of work for the residency.
